  Daily tasks for volunteers:

Work days: Mon, Wed, Thur, Fri.

  MORNING
  • Preparation of diets for the mammals including preparation of fruits, vegetables and other food stuffs.
  • General animal husbandry including feeding of the mammals (including some close contact with some species),
  • Monitoring of health and behaviour,
  • Cleaning of enclosures and animals homes.
  • Cleaning of baths and perches for raptors, cleaning of night-time housing for raptors.
  • General cleaning and husbandry for wild raptor causalities. This will depend on the causalities being cared for at the time and may include some administration of medication (supervised) or first aid. Contact with wild casualties will be supervised at all times, is not guaranteed  and will be minimal.

AFTERNOON

  • General grounds maintenance which may include,
    • grass cutting, gardening, painting etc. Work on enclosure improvement.
  • Provision and observation of enrichment for mammals, some close contact with some species may be included.
  • Handling, training and exercising of birds of prey (February to October only). Supervised handling with the raptors and the opportunity to fly them to the fist for rewards. Close contact with hawks, owls and falcons.
  • Feeding of the carnivores, preparation of raw meat including rabbits, beef, rats and mice.
  • Preparation of following day’s meat feeds.
  • Record keeping of animals behaviour, illness etc.

Tasks which MAY be included but are not guaranteed:

  • Assistance with public flying displays where the birds are flown informant of an audience. 
  • Raptor First aid, fitting and use of falconry equipment, instruction in basic falconry skills.
  • Assistance in school talks where commentary is given to pupils and the birds are taken to visit school children and other groups.
  • General husbandry, feeding and handling of reptiles, including some close contact.
  • Rearing of young animals / birds if required dependant on time of year.
  • Rescue of wild injured birds of prey. Assistance on call outs to a wild raptor in need of rehabilitation.
  • Release of wild raptors back into the wild following treatment.
  • Observation of zoo vet carrying out any practises, (subject to requirement). 
  • Assistance of collection of rescued animals, which may involve travelling to other animal collections.


    PLEASE NOTE: ALL TASKS ARE SUBJECT TO CHANGE. Some are dependant on time of year, weather, requirement and are at discretion of the director.
