UK - Wildlife Centre Conservation project
| |
This is a unique Wildlife Centre in many ways. Many birds and animals are orphaned at birth in the British countryside, collectors of rare or exotic breeds get to a point where they cannot or do not have the right facilities to keep an animal that is simply growing and demanding more. Not only does is this Wildlife Centre have zoo status but are one of the UK's leading raptor centres. They take in animals, care for them and nurture them back to health in their own purpose-built hospital. |

GENERAL OVERVIEW

You will be joining a small team of enthusiastic and knowledgeable wildlife experts. The centre was set-up in 2003; their growth has simply exceed all expectations. Due to their expansion programmes over the past seven years (not to mention the influx of animals and expansions plans for 2011-2012) they now need man-power to help sustain their growth and achieve their goals, namely:
- New Bat cave
- Rebuilding their hospital
- New wildcat enclosure
Zoos around the world call them to take animals, the general public call and report injured or abandoned animals; the wildlife centre responds the best they can with the funds and resources they have. Dedicated volunteers and full-time staff make all this happen. They are about to enter a new phase of development only achieveable with new volunteers and helpers. |

Volunteer requisites
Minimum age 18, reasonably physically fit, enthusiastic, handy with a hammer, paint-brush and DIY skills would be most useful! Volunteers that are wheelchair bound may have extreme difficulties in achieving the tasks set and getting around the centre. Most parts of the Wildlife Centre are wheelchair friendly, but it can be very awkward if not difficult to help in most of the activities due to the nature and layout of the Centre.
You may be called up to help with the wild raptors. As as a side note, Falconists place birds on the their left gloved hand (not right). If you are called upon to assist, please bare in mind this point. |

A general itenerary has been devised for the duration of the voilunteer's stay. However, it is flexible taking into consideration the skills, knowledge and ability of each of the volunteers.
Each day will start with set tasks and routines such as (but not limited to) food preparation, feeding, cleaning, flying of birds assist in hospital duties (if required) and other such duties.
The centre during the British summer months is a vibrant hub of activity with the zoo section of the premises being extremely busy with tourists and visitors. You may be called upon to help in this department under various capacities.
Like all public places, maintenance and daily up keep are a necessary items to fulfil. The Wildlife Centre is no different. Volunteers will be expected to be part of the team and join in the upkeep schedule and activities. The Centre is particulary calling out for any persons handy with a paint brush, hammer and those with any DIY skills!
