An alphabetical list of Associations, organizations, groups and interested parties along with general information websites regarding Marine life. This is not an exhaustive listing. If there are any not here that you think should be here - please send us their details and link and we'll include them. This list is provided for the benefit of all volunteers.

Founded in 1967, The American Cetacean Society is the oldest whale conservation in thr world. The Society's aim and goal is to protect whales, dolphins, porpoises and their habitats through public education, research grants and conservation actions.

Cascadia Research was founded in 1979 primarily to conduct research needed to manage and protect threatened marine mammals. It is a non-profit scientific and education organization based in Olympia, Washington, USA.

Cetacean Society International
Cetacean Society International
The Cetacean Society International is a conservation, education, and research organization. Their goal is the "optimum utilization of the whale resources," as called for in the 1946 Treaty of the International Whaling Commission. They support and promote benign activities such as regulated whale-watching, non-lethal and humane research, and widespread educational, environmental and observation programs relating to free-roaming cetaceans internationally.

The International Whaling Commission was set up under the International Convention for the Regulation of Whaling (signed in Washington DC in 1946). The purpose of the Convention was and is to provide for the proper conservation of whale stocks and thus make possible the orderly development of the whaling industry.

Minke Whale Research
Dr Birtles and his team have been researching the dwarf minke whales for nine years, and have developed a Code of Practice for swimming with whales in co-operation with the tourism industry. They are also encouraging tourists to help with their research. Their website is all about Minke Whales.
   
North Atlantic Marine Mammal Commission - NAMMCO
North Atlantic Marine Mammal Commission - NAMMCO
The North Atlantic Marine Mammal Commission is an international body for cooperation on the conservation, management and study of marine animals in the north Atlantic. NAMMCO provides a mechanism for cooperation on conservation and management for all species of cetaceans (whales and dolphins) and pinnipeds (seals and walruses) in the region.

Established in 1977, Sea Shepherd Conservation Society (SSCS) is an international non-profit, marine wildlife conservation organization. Their mission is to end the destruction of habitat and slaughter of wildlife in the world's oceans in order to conserve and protect ecosystems and species.
   
Sea Watch Foundation
Sea Watch Foundation - SWF
Sea Watch is a national marine conservation research charity dedicated to the protection of whales, dolphins and porpoises (cetaceans) around the UK. Sea Watch alerts government, industry and environmental organisations to any problems, and prompt practical measures to help protect them from existing and impending threats.
   
CSIP UK Cetaceans Strandings Investigation Programme - CSIP
The UK Cetacean Strandings Investigation Programme (CSIP) has been running since 1990 and is funded by Defra and the Devolved Administrations. We coordinate the investigation of all whales, dolphins and porpoises (collectively known as cetaceans), marine turtles and basking sharks that strand around the UK coastline. As well as documenting each individual stranding, we also retrieve a proportion for investigation at post-mortem to allow us to establish a cause of death. The data and samples collected during the course of our research have also facilitated a large number of international collaborations, which have addressed a wide range of scientific questions.

WhaleNet is an interactive educational web site which focuses on whales and marine research. WhaleNet is sponsored by Wheelock College in Boston, Massachusetts with initial support from the National Science Foundation.

Whale Trust was formed in 2001 to support field research on whales and their marine environment. Its founders are passionate scientists and explorers who believe that science-the quest for answers to the most intriguing questions about our natural world--lies at the heart of environmental education and conservation.

The Whaleman Foundation is an oceanic research, conservation and production organization dedicated to preserving and protecting dolphins, whales, and their ocean habitat. Their mission is to preserve and protect cetaceans (dolphins, whales, and porpoises) and their critical habitats.
   
Wild Whales
Wild Whales
Wild Whales is a British Columbia Cetacean Sightings Network, a conservation and research program of the Vancouver Aquarium in partnership with Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO). They collect sightings of all cetaceans (whales, dolphins and porpoises) and sea turtles from British Columbia and surrounding waters.
