Following is the briefest of outlines to the country. It is not meant to be an exhaustive or comprehensive covereage of the country- but just a mere taster. Our VCIG covers more detail along with references, follow-up links and resources.

IRELAND

Ireland is one of those rugged, exciting, fun-filled places that you can't help falling in love with. Steeped in history, myth and legend, it's a place you'll want to return to time and time again.

The west coast is in complete contrast to the east. The east of Ireland contains most of the population including the Irish capital - Dublin. Dublin is the home of Guinness, Irish rugby and of course, the cultural and artistic centre of the country. The west is true-rugged country with wild open moors and rustic villages.

If you have ever been in an Irish pub in your own town or city, then you'll be entralled to be in the 'real thing' in Ireland. After a hard-days volunteering work, there is nothing more enjoyable than sitting in the heady atmosphere of an Irish pub sipping a cool glass of something special or a real Irish coffee!

The Island
Northern Ireland and southern Ireland (The Republic of Ireland) are two separate countries. Northern Ireland is part of the United Kingdom of Great Britain. Southern Ireland is a self-goverening country with its own parliament located in Dublin. It is the third largest island in Europe with approximately 1.4 millioin people live in Northern Ireland and 4.1 in southern.

Geography
Ireland does not contain any high mountainous areas but has relatively low-lying mountains surrounding a central plain. Bordering the Atlanic Ocean, its weather is mild but changeable. It is known for its rain! This results in the countryside being lush and green.

Fauna and Flora
Being an island and to the west or Europe's mainland, Ireland has only 26 native land mammal species and over 400 bird species recorded. Aquatic wildlife abound in the rich seas around Ireland with turtles, seals, shark, whales and dolphins in regular sight. Interestingly, there are no snakes in Ireland and only one reptile - the common lizzard.

Sports
The most popular sport in Ireland in terms of match attendance and community involvement is Gaelic football accounting for 34% of all sports attendances at events in Ireland and abroad, this is followed by hurling, soccer (English football) and rugby.
