Following is the briefest of outlines to the country. It is not meant to be an exhaustive or comprehensive covereage of the country- but just a mere taster. Our VCIG covers more detail along with references, follow-up links and resources.

GREECE

Greece is located in south eastern Europe, situated on the southern end of the Balkan Peninsula. It borders Albania, Macedonia and Bulgaria (to the north) and Turkey to the east.

Greece is considered to be the cradle of Western Civilization - being the birthpalce of Democracy, the Olympics, Drama, Science and many other disciplines we take for granted today.

The country has the tenth longest coastline in the world at 14,880 km (9,246 miles) in length, with over 1,400 islands of which 227 are inhabited. It has a wealth of marine and sealife - though some endangered and need of conservation help.

The Islands
Greece is steeped in myths, legends and fascinating history. Eighty percent of Greece consists of mountains or hills, making the country one of the most mountainous countries in Europe. Mount Olympus is the highest mountain in the country, some 9,570 feet (2,917m) high.
Geography
The terrain of Greece is varied from the hilly north to the coastal plains and islands in the south, as such it can be regarded as having three climates: Mediterranean, Alpine and Temperate. The climate change has a great influence on the fauna and flora of the country.
Fauna and Flora
Greece is a popular destination for tourists - a major source of foreign exchange earnings and revenue accounting for 15% of Greece’s total GDP. The Aegean sea lies to the east of the mainland, the Ionian Sea to the west, and the Mediterranean sea to the south. This as one can imagine has a great impact on the marine and wildlife in general. Volunteers are very much needed to help monitor and assist in conservation projects.

Sports
The most popular sport in Greece is Football (soccer).
